BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor of Social Work Degree; or BSW equivalency;
- or a Bachelor’s Degree in a Human Services or Health related field;
- a minimum of three (3) years relevant experience working with First Nation children and families;
- Registered with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers are preferred;
- Or an acceptable level of formal education and extensive direct service experience working with First Nations children and families with a plan for obtaining any necessary additional qualifications or training to be formalized in writing as part of the offer and acceptance of employment.
- Knowledge of community services, family dynamics and community culture and teachings
- A solid understanding of and sensitivity to the experiences of First Nations and Indigenous peoples and the impact of the legacy of Residential Schools and the Sixties Scoop from a trauma informed lens.
- Will be Native in preference to other applicants; Willingness to maintain ongoing professional and cultural and traditional ways of healing.
- Will have an Ontario class "G" driver's license and own vehicle with valid insurance; Must pass a criminal record check.
- Understand the importance of confidentiality and the ability to work with tact and discretion and compassion.
- Mediation/conflict resolution/family group decision-making training is considered an asset;
- Good knowledge of the Six Nations Community, sensitive and respectful of Six Nations culture.
- Certificate in counselling, group dynamics, and/or crisis counselling will be considered an asset.

POSITION DESCRIPTION
POSITION TITLE: Family Well- Being Navigator
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:
Reports to and works under the direction and supervision of the Director of Social Services, or Designate, Six Nations of the Grand River Elected Council (SNGREC).
PURPOSE & SCOPE OF THE POSITION:
The purpose of this position is to respond to Six Nations status or those eligible for status families with children under the age of 18 years who are experiencing difficulties connecting with services or unaware of resources available to them. The Family Well-Being Navigator will provide advocacy to the services they are currently linked to with and/or arrange for case management or wrap around service planning meetings. The support provided will be based on the principles of the Haudenosaunee teachings and strength-based approach.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Technical Functions
- Assist with the coordination of case meetings or advocacy with agencies and services.
- Providing community education and ongoing promotion of rights of children and families.
- Raising awareness of the substantive equality measures to keep children out of care or returning children to safe places with support as deemed necessary.
- Providing skills and education to those experiencing challenges with the “system”.
- Implementation of services within the scope of applicable legislation.
Administrative Functions- Requires record keeping, data collection and documentation procedures, including any necessary forms and reports to meet the contractual obligation from the funder and Six Nations of the Grand River Elected Council.
- Recording and tracking financial expenditures.
- Maintain confidentiality of information regarding the client, family, and community members involved with the program.
- Ensure the safety of the client and their family is maintained by carrying out duties according to Health and Safety Standards for clients, their families, other staff, and themselves.
- Assist with the development of an annual work plan and program evaluation.
- Works with other service providers to support and connect the client's goals and action from the meetings and plans of care, including who is responsible and completion dates.
Communications Functions –
- To advance the involvement and support for the families from a strength-based inclusive and collaborative approach to promote prevention services,
- Encourage the involvement and support of the family, extended family, and the community, in planning and decision-making for children and themselves.
- Wear an identification badge.
- Promote the services of the Family Well-Being Program to the community and other services and agencies in the community and proximity to Six Nations.
Develop and link with agencies related to but not limited to housing, mental health and addictions, employment, education, financial literacy, and other community agencies.
- Other Functions – Perform other job-related duties as may reasonably be required by the supervisor or designate and participate with the Six Nations Community Emergency plan.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work has a high profile, extensive public contact and is subject to deadlines and interruptions. Work may at times be subject to unscheduled hours and out of office meetings.
Work will involve after business hours, after hours and weekend work.
Work involves direct contact with children and families who are involved or at risk of involvement with children's aid societies, those who are homeless or near homeless, those who may be involved with the Youth Justice System or considered vulnerable.
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:
With the Director of Social Services:
Receives direction, guidance, encouragement; discusses plans and priorities.
With Child and Family Services Prevention, First Nations Representatives (Band Reps); Mental Health and Addictions, Ontario Works and Protection Services:
Receives referrals and create a collaborative working relationship with staff for positive client outcomes.
With Other Staff
Maintains courtesy, co-operation and teamwork with all staff.
With External Agencies
Represents and promotes Six Nations interests relative to Social Services; maintains awareness of legislative policy and program changes; seeks to develop collaborative professional working relationships.
With the Public
Represents and promotes Six Nations Social Services in a courteous, co-operative, and positive manner, provides information and assistance.

- An excellent working knowledge of the Child, Youth and Family Services Act, Mental Health Act, and other pertinent legislation, Ministry standards and guidelines,
- A high level of knowledge of diagnostic and treatment theories, methodologies and practices and ability to integrate theory and practice.
- Will be knowledgeable about Haudenosaunee culture and the contemporary characteristics of a social issues within the Six Nations' social structure.
- Will be familiar with the range of methods and techniques utilized in intervening in crisis situations.
IMPACT OF ERROR:
Errors in judgement and in the conduct of duties could lead to loss of credibility, poor public relations, confusion, duplication of effort and misinformation being given to the Director of Social Services, SNGREC, Government Agencies and the public.
CONTROL:
Guiding principles set by the Social Services Department and the SNGREC.
Must work within the Policies and Procedures established by the Six Nations Elected Council for the Social Services Department.
