The Role

The Structural Engineer will be part of the Structures & Process Equipment team within the Technologies Business Practice. The role is primarily focused on technical project execution, as well as client engagement, proposal development, and business-development activities.

The successful candidate will perform structural engineering for heavy industrial structures and process equipment, including fitness-for-service and condition assessment of existing assets; design of novel structures, equipment, and engineered systems; and stress, thermal, and coupled thermo-mechanical assessment. Work may address complex phenomena including dynamic loading, vibration, seismic effects, fatigue, fracture, creep, crack propagation, and others using first-principles methods, finite element analysis (FEA), and other engineering tools.

The Structural Engineer will prepare calculations, technical reports, specifications, and design drawings; collaborate with multidisciplinary project teams; and communicate technical findings clearly to clients and colleagues. The role will report to a Practice Area Lead or Project Manager, depending on project size and organization.

As the successful candidate, you will:

• Plan, execute, and deliver structural engineering work for heavy industrial projects, meeting scope, quality, budget, and schedule objectives.
• Assess existing industrial structures and process equipment to determine condition, fitness-for-service, remaining life, repair requirements, and opportunities for continued or modified operation.
• Develop practical designs for new, modified, or novel structures and equipment where established design workflows may not be available.
• Perform first-principles calculations and numerical assessments, including linear and nonlinear stress and heat-transfer analysis in coupled thermo-mechanical assessment using finite element modelling.
• Evaluate structural response to static, thermal, dynamic, vibration, seismic, fatigue, creep, crack-propagation, and other relevant loading or degradation mechanisms.
• Prepare and review engineering calculations, design drawings, technical specifications, data sheets, scopes of work, technical memoranda, and reports.
• Apply safety, integrity, constructability, operability, and maintainability principles throughout engineering work.
• Apply relevant codes, standards, quality requirements, and internal procedures to engineering activities, including novel applications that require sound engineering judgment.
• Collaborate with other engineering disciplines, procurements personnel, project managers, and other specialists across offices and regions to deliver high-quality engineering work.
• Participate in design reviews, field investigations, site inspections, and technical discussions with clients and other stakeholders.
• Communicate analysis methods, assumptions, findings, risks, and recommendations clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
• Manage assigned tasks and small work packages with limited supervision, including coordination of inputs, monitoring of progress against budget and schedule, and managing small teams.
• Support client engagement, proposal preparation, scope definition, cost estimation, and project pursuits, while building trusted working relationships.
• Contribute to the development of Hatch technologies, specialized methodologies, engineering tools, and reusable technical knowledge.
• Provide guidance, mentorship, and technical support to designers and less-experienced engineers, as appropriate to the assignment.
• Stamp documents and drawings when required and when appropriately licensed and responsible for the work.

You bring to the role:

• A recognized bachelor’s degree in civil or structural engineering from an accredited university.
• 0-3 years of progressive structural engineering experience, preferably involving heavy industrial structures, process equipment, or existing-asset assessment.
• Strong interest and capability in first-principles engineering analysis and design, particularly for complex or novel industrial applications, and including complex phenomena such as yielding, fatigue, creep, vibration, seismic response, etc.
• Registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Canada or demonstrated progress toward professional registration (e.g. registration as engineering trainee / EIT).
• Experience preparing engineering calculations and clear, concise technical deliverables.
• Sound understanding of structural design codes, engineering standards, and the application of engineering judgment.
• Experience using structural or numerical analysis software such as ANSYS Workbench, SAP2000, STAAD.Pro, MathCAD, and others.
• Ability to organize and execute assigned work with limited supervision while meeting quality, cost, and schedule commitments.
• Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly to colleagues and clients.
• Ability to work effectively across disciplines, offices, regions, and cultures.
• Interest or experience in client engagement, proposal preparation, and business development.
• Commitment to health, safety, environmental responsibility, quality, and professional integrity.

Competencies (knowledge, skill, attributes):

• Master’s degree or higher in a relevant engineering discipline and specialization
• Experience designing or assessing industrial assets such as structural steelwork, reinforced-concrete structures and foundations, pressure-vessel or equipment supports, cranes and supporting structures, piping-support systems, custom machinery, or similar equipment and structures.
• Familiarity with relevant standards such as CSA S16, CSA A23.3, NBCC, AISC 360, ACI 318, ASCE 7, ASME Section III, ASME Section VIII, API 579-1/ASME FFS-1, or comparable standards.
• Experience with finite element analysis of stress, heat transfer, thermal stress, vibration, seismic response, fatigue, fracture, creep, or nonlinear structural behaviour.
• Experience with fitness-for-service, condition assessment, failure investigation, repair design, remaining-life assessment, or modification of existing industrial assets.
• Experience working within formal quality-management systems, including ISO-based or nuclear-specific programs.
• Experience with field investigations, industrial sites, construction support, and coordination with fabricators or contractors.
• Knowledge of 3D data-centric design systems, engineering-management systems, and established project-execution workflows.

Compensation

Range: $82,000 - $90,000

Your individual compensation within this range will depend on factors such as skills, experience, qualifications and location.
