Data Science & Advanced Analytics at Unity Health

The Data Science and Advanced Analytics (DSAA) team at Unity Health Toronto (UHT) is an advanced healthcare data analytics group that leverages data science, machine learning, optimization, and artificial intelligence to improve patient outcomes and hospital system efficiency. Since 2016, the DSAA team has deployed over 50 advanced analytics solutions including: patient deterioration risk prediction algorithms, staff scheduling optimizations, computer vision algorithms for medical imaging, and many others. Our solutions have realized significant reductions in mortality, readmission rates, operating costs, and human effort at St. Michael's Hospital, St. Joseph's Hospital, and Providence Healthcare.

DSAA Product Development

The Director of Product Development leads and manages a team of software developers and designers in creating AI-enabled solutions that integrate seamlessly into the busy workflows of stakeholders across Unity's hospital environments. The Product Development team is specifically responsible for the final-mile of delivering AI analytics to end-users, including two core functions:

Design: How must we design the frontend outputs of AI model outputs so that they are timely, clear, and actionable for diverse end-users? How should we approach engagement with stakeholders throughout the design process and what methods should we employ to evaluate the efficacy of a UI?

Application Engineering : How can we translate design mock-ups into reliable, scalable, and robust software systems such as web applications, alerts, EHR integrations? How can we continuously improve upon our development practices through testing, Dev/Sec/ML/Ops, and investments in infrastructure?

In addition to supervising the operations of the Product Development team, the Director, Product Development engages in various strategic and planning initiatives pertaining to AI at UHT, collaborates with external stakeholders, and represents UHT at conferences and in presentations.

Responsibilities

• Lead the design, implementation, testing, deployment, evaluation, and maintenance efforts required to build production-ready user-facing advanced-analytics applications.
• Develop and enforce Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure that product development activities (namely; user engagement, design, software development, testing, deployment, evaluation, maintenance, and documentation) meet UHT standards and are adhered to by members of the Product Development team.
• Develop the documentation and training resources required for DSAA members to adhere to the SOPs.
• Provide the other teams within the DSAA (Advanced Analytics, Data Integration and Governance, and Project Management) software engineering support including; optimizing and cleaning data science model code, building data pipelines (APIs, scheduled reports, queries), providing software testing and quality assurance, implementing error monitoring, and integrating project management tools into the DSAA software development ecosystem,
• Accountable for the security and robustness of production applications, ensuring that downtime is minimized and unplanned outages are resolved in a timely manner. Responsible for ensuring that production applications comply with UHT standards and protocols regarding security, privacy, and downtime.
• Manage the maintenance of existing and legacy DSAA applications. Facilitate the end-of-life plans for applications that are no longer in active use.
• Work with other DSAA Directors to plan and support efficient collaboration between the Advanced Analytics, Data Integration and Governance, Product Management, and AI Commercialization teams.
• Identify opportunities to leverage systems that integrate Product Development SOPs into DSAA workflows such as GitLab, CI/CD tools, Click Up, Slack, Posit Connect, and monitoring systems.
• Advise on the procurement and integration of new technologies that support the Product Development SOPs by conducting research, liaising with external vendors, building proof-of-concepts, and conducting cost-benefit analyses of potential integrations.
• Develop internal tools and software utilities that support the SOPs of the Product Development team and the DSAA more broadly.
• Work with the VP of DSAA and Director of AI Commercialization to identify opportunities to commercialize internally developed tools. Lead in the development and design efforts required to package internal tools as commercially viable products.
• Identify opportunities for strategic partnerships and collaborations with teams within UHT and other external groups (such as academia and private organizations) relating to product development. Maintain professional and collegial relationships with collaborators to strengthen strategic partnerships.
• Serve as the operational leader for the Product Development group within the DSAA team.
• Advise on software architecture and implementation plans for applications that are to be implemented by members of the Product Development team.

Qualifications:

• Minimum five (5) years' experience working in software development/engineering.
• Experience managing or supervising a team of software developers.
• Five (5) plus years' experience using project management tools and methodologies.
• Proficient in both backend and frontend web development with common languages and frameworks (eg. Python: Django, Flask; JavaScript: NodeJS, React, Angular, Vue, Express; R Shiny)
• Proficient in data science tools such as R and Python.
• Expertise in Human-Computer Iteration methods and Design (user studies, usability heuristics, usability experiments, A/B testing, creating design mockups and prototypes).
• Extensive experience developing project plans to meet business objectives.
• Experience developing and managing project budgets.
• Demonstrated experience building and developing highly effective teams.
• Demonstrated experience improving and automating business processes through the application of technology.
• Self-directed to continuously update knowledge as business and system changes occur.
• Has initiative to proactively drive business and system process improvements.
• Highly analytical so as to be able to identify gaps or address issues/pain points. Must be able to visualize, articulate, conceptualize and solve problems.
• Ability to communicate to all levels of stakeholders both written and orally.
• Must be able to adapt to various situations/people. Works well with other team members and stakeholders. Ability to build and maintain strong working relationships.
• Time management and prioritization - need to be able to work on many issues and tasks with different deadlines. Must be able to work independently and under pressure with tight deadlines.
