Security Officer

Government of Nunavut

This employment opportunity is restricted to residents of Iqaluit only.

Under the direction of the Manager of Security and Facility Maintenance, the Security Officer is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure learning environment for students, staff and visitors across all Nunatta campus buildings, including the Main Campus, New Residence, and Family Residence Units.

The role includes greeting and welcoming visitors, providing guidance, and monitoring and authorizing entrance and departure to guard against security risks.

Patrolling campus premises and ensuring fire exits are closed, secured, accessible, unobscured, and functional. Assisting with room/unit inspections to ensure compliance with fire safety and health regulations, and familiarizing with fire safety procedures so students in residence can evacuate safely during a fire alarm.

Responding to resident calls for assistance with safety and security matters, ensuring main campus students follow rules and expectations, and reporting all incidents by submitting incident reports to the Residence Manager.

May be required to be on call.

Requirements: High school Grade 10 and at least 1 year experience in security or related field; possession of a Class 4 driver’s licence (or must obtain within 6 months of hire).

This is a Position of Trust and a satisfactory Criminal Record Check is required.

The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English, and French. Applicants may submit their résumé in any of the official languages. Fluency in more than one language is considered an asset. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross‑cultural environment are also considered assets.

Acceptable combinations of education and experience may be considered. Indeterminate Government of Nunavut employees may be offered a competitive transfer assignment for the duration of the term.

An eligibility list may be created to fill future vacancies.

  • Priority will be given to Nunavut Inuit self‑identifying under the Nunavut Agreement as per the Priority Hiring Policy.
  • Employees serving a probationary period must provide written authorization from the deputy head of their department; this must accompany the application.
  • Possession of a criminal record may not disqualify candidates; assessment will be against scope and duties.
  • Applicants may submit their résumé in any of the Official Languages of Nunavut.
  • Only those candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.

The onus is on candidates with foreign post‑secondary credentials to have them assessed through a recognized Canadian education institution. Failure to do so may result in the rejection of the application.
