Information Systems Specialist, Network Support

Summary

Reporting to the Director, Information Technology Services, the Information Specialist, Network Support contributes to the accomplishment of the London Public Library's vision, mission and strategic plan by planning, designing, developing, implementing and supporting the technical architecture that meets the London Public Library's technology plan and electronic information needs, specifically the Wide Area Network (WAN); hardware and software servers; system wide data back up; antivirus and spam solutions; specialty databases; and a variety of server and desktop operating systems. Creates and maintains documentation; supports standards, policies and procedures related to the implementation of technology; and identifies, tests and applies current and emerging technological architecture and infrastructure as approved by the Director.

Accountabilities

1. Wide Area Network Development & Administration

• Plans, designs, develops, tests, maintains and supports the Library's Wide Area Network (WAN) and wireless network.
• Collaborates with the Web/Internet, Network & Intranet Specialist in the design, configuration and implementation of the WAN.
• Monitors and analyzes system indicators for measuring system performance.
• Identifies, troubleshoots and resolves network and wireless issues in a timely fashion. Collaborates with ITS team, communication service providers and partners to resolve network, wireless and system outages.
• Oversees LAN security and performance. Develops and implements LAN policies and procedures.
• Ensures integrity and privacy of staff and customer information that is stored electronically on system, preventing access to network resources from unauthorized access. Develops and maintains firewall solutions.
• Writes and edits technical documents such as system documentation and disaster plans.

2. Server Software Administration

• Performs routine offline backups of data, ensuring that necessary data is available in disaster recovery situations and downtime is minimized.
• Applies current patches to backup software and hosting server operating system software.
• Recovers lost files and data upon request.
• Develops and maintains appropriate documentation.

3. Microsoft 365, Database & Directory Administration

• Routinely performs preventative maintenance procedures such as database checks to ensure the integrity of the system-wide e-mail system and databases.
• Creates new user accounts; maintains current and expired user accounts.
• Resolves issues with user account inconsistencies and errors.
• Performs moves, adds and changes upon request.
• Routinely applies current patches to the directory databases and the server operating systems.
• Repairs corrupt databases and accounts.
• Develops and maintains up-to-date supporting documentation, diagrams and configuration files through the use of technical writing methodologies, CAD tools and software.

4. Technical Support / Customer Service

• Provides timely software support to employees and Library users via telephone, e-mail or onsite in response to ITS Help Desk or other requests.
• Participates in and collaborates closely with Library staff, teams and committees on projects and new initiatives, identifying appropriate solutions and making recommendations related to technology. Leads key technology projects.
• Provides technical support in emergencies during the evening and on weekends as required.
• Researches current and emerging technologies and tests available technologies where applicable. Remains current with trends in technology through the use of training software, reading professional literature, continuing education and conference attendance to enable LPL to be an early adapter of key and appropriate ideas relating to technology. Shares information learned with others.

• Three-year community college which includes courses in advanced technologies, operating systems and networks or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• CNA (Certified Network Associate), CNE (Certified Network Engineer), CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) or equivalent experience.
• Expertise and proven ability in installing, maintaining, upgrading and troubleshooting Network Operating Systems in a WAN/LAN environment.
• Expertise and proven ability in installing, maintaining, upgrading and troubleshooting document handling / e-mail systems.
• Expertise in Windows desktop and server operating systems.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to balance priorities and meet deadlines.
• A bias for action, creativity, innovation and execution in a rapidly changing environment.
• Good interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to work independently and cooperatively in a team environment.
• Customer service focus.
• Familiarly with current library trends, standards and emerging technologies an asset.
• Demonstrated experience in the use of technology to improve access to library services and materials an asset.
• Ability to work evening and weekends as required.
• Valid driver's license and reliable transportation required.

Compensation & Other Information:

Band 8 - $37.040- $47.320 per hour

This position works 100% on site to be able to support the needs of the London Public Library.
