About Us

The Fleet Services Division of the Department of Public Works is recruiting for a Mechanic II (Automotive Repair Technician) to join the Fleet Services team in Miller Lake.

This is your opportunity to become part of the team who are pivotal in ensuring the Public Works Fleet is running smoothly and safely. Without our Automotive Repair Technician's proactive measures, equipment issues or failures could lead to an interruption of services provided. As the Technician, you are one of our key team players who support the overall safety and efficiency of our provincial road network.

About Our Opportunity

Under the general supervision of the Shop Supervisor (Miller Lake), the Mechanic diagnoses equipment failure, repairs, rebuilds and makes adjustments to a variety of department vehicles.

Primary Accountabilities

The Mechanic uses specialized tools and equipment located in government facilities designed and equipped for mechanical work and assists with field repairs as required. The Mechanic may do any one or a combination of the following or other related duties as required to complete vehicle repairs, modifications and/or preventative maintenance. Some duties will consist of Mechanical Repairs, Internal Combustion / Diesel Engines, Fuel Systems, Engine Management Systems, Electrical, Electronic and Vacuum Control Systems, Power Train Systems, Anti-lock Braking Systems, Steering and Suspension Systems and Heating and Cooling Systems.

Qualifications and Experience

High School Diploma or GED and an Inter-Provincial Red Seal Certificate in the Automotive Service Trade plus a minimum of five (5) years diversified mechanical experience is required. A valid Nova Scotia's driver's license and mechanic tools are required upon hire. Provincial Red Seal Certificate of Qualification in Truck and Transport Repair, or Air Conditioning Certification would be considered assets.

A knowledge of computer-controlled engine diagnostic technology and competency as well as a general knowledge for determining paint codes and parts would be considered an asset along with demonstrated oral and written communication skills and the ability to work in a team environment.

A valid Nova Scotia driver's license and mechanic tools are required.

Upon hire, applicants will be required to successfully complete Nova Scotia Motor Vehicle Inspection (MVI) training as part of their probationary requirements.

Additional certification and skills considered an asset include:

• Provincial Certificate of Qualification in Truck and Transport, Autobody or Mechanical Trade;
• WHMIS;
• St. John Ambulance First Aid certification;
• Driver's License with Air Brake endorsement certificate;
• Knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act;
• Knowledge of MVI regulations;
• Wheel Installation;
• I-Car (specific training unitized bodies); and
• Training in welding, pipe fitting, wiring and new paint types/application Forklift course.

In this role you consistently demonstrate initiative, remaining up to date in changes to equipment, methods and technology within the mechanical field. Strong communication skills are necessary for the times when you will be helping staff diagnose and resolve equipment issues. You must also be able to work effectively with minimal supervision as most of your time will be spent working independently. Professionalism and a high standard for client and customer service is required.

You will be assessed on the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: practical driving test, written examination, interview, and reference checks.

Working Conditions

This position is based at the Miller Lake mechanical branch and does not typically require travel. Occasional travel for training or support at other branches may be required.

Work is performed in a mechanical repair environment occasioned by noise, fumes, dust, grease/oil, used oil, chemical/cleaning substances such as brake cleaner and solvents; vibration from impact tools; extreme working temperatures related to work with engine coolants and torches; and at times adverse weather conditions while operating in a field environment.

Additional Information

There is one (1) opportunity and most of your work will be located at Miller Lake, but you will be required to travel and work in other mechanic shops throughout the province as required.

This opportunity is for a 52-week Year-Round position – the duties of which are full time and continuous in nature.

Pay Grade:

Salary Range: $36.58 Hourly
