Position Summary... The orthoptist assesses patients with strabismus, and/or diplopia, to aid the ophthalmologist in the diagnosis and treatment of these patients. In addition, the orthoptist will perform A-scans prior to cataract surgery. PAM tests are also performed by the orthoptist.

What We are Looking For...

• Bachelor's degree program in a relatable field
• 3 to 5 years of practical and related experience
• Experience in immersion A-scans, PAM's, Humphrey and Goldmann visual fields is preferred
• Certification by the American or Canadian Orthoptic Council
• Member of The Canadian Orthoptic Society is preferred
• Knowledge and administration of the commonly used topical anesthetics, mydriatics, cycloplegies and miotics
• Strong knowledge of names and use of topical steroids and antibiotics
• General medical knowledge; elementary knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the visual system
• Knowledge of systemic disorders, diabetes, hypertension, brain tumors, ocular emergencies

What Will Grab Our Attention... In fulfilling the mandate of this role, the Orthoptist will:

• Perform ocular motor assessment on adult patients
• Perform binocular vision assessment
• Perform a Hess screen test
• Interpret results, formulate a diagnosis and patient specific treatment plan
• Perform PAM and immersion A-scan testing
• Knowledge of corneal conditions, ocular conditions that can affect the results
• Perform vision acuity, dilation, pressure, history taking, lensometry, colour vision testing, removing post op patches, and assisting in minor procedures
• User level maintenance as prescribed by the manufacturer of the ophthalmic instruments such as visual acuity, projector, muscle light, ophthalmoscopes, cameras, lensometers and other equipment and sterilization, calibrate Goldmann
• Assisting with patient flow and room preparation
• Performs Humphrey and Goldmann visual fields, OCT
• Assists with dilation or workups
