Position Summary... The orthoptist assesses patients with strabismus, and/or diplopia, to aid the ophthalmologist in the diagnosis and treatment of these patients. In addition, the orthoptist will perform A-scans prior to cataract surgery. PAM tests are also performed by the orthoptist.
What We are Looking For...- Bachelor's degree program in a relatable field
- 3 to 5 years of practical and related experience
- Experience in immersion A-scans, PAM's, Humphrey and Goldmann visual fields is preferred
- Certification by the American or Canadian Orthoptic Council
- Member of The Canadian Orthoptic Society is preferred
- Knowledge and administration of the commonly used topical anesthetics, mydriatics, cycloplegies and miotics
- Strong knowledge of names and use of topical steroids and antibiotics
- General medical knowledge; elementary knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the visual system
- Knowledge of systemic disorders, diabetes, hypertension, brain tumors, ocular emergencies
- Perform ocular motor assessment on adult patients
- Perform binocular vision assessment
- Perform a Hess screen test
- Interpret results, formulate a diagnosis and patient specific treatment plan
- Perform PAM and immersion A-scan testing
- Knowledge of corneal conditions, ocular conditions that can affect the results
- Perform vision acuity, dilation, pressure, history taking, lensometry, colour vision testing, removing post op patches, and assisting in minor procedures
- User level maintenance as prescribed by the manufacturer of the ophthalmic instruments such as visual acuity, projector, muscle light, ophthalmoscopes, cameras, lensometers and other equipment and sterilization, calibrate Goldmann
- Assisting with patient flow and room preparation
- Performs Humphrey and Goldmann visual fields, OCT
- Assists with dilation or workups
