IT Firewall Administrator

Our client is seeking Intermediate IT Firewall Administrators to support critical IT infrastructure and security projects across multiple health authorities in British Columbia. These roles will be responsible for implementing, configuring, and troubleshooting firewall, VPN, WAF, IDS/IPS, and security controls across both on-premises and cloud environments (Azure, AWS).
The successful candidates will collaborate closely with security and network operations teams to ensure solutions align with enterprise security policies, compliance standards, and project requirements.
Responsibilities:
- Implement and modify firewall, proxy, VPN, WAF, and IDS/IPS rules per project requirements.
- Configure and support cloud-native firewall/security controls, including Azure NSGs/ASGs and AWS security groups.
- Ensure secure connectivity between on-premises data centres and cloud environments (Azure, AWS).
- Troubleshoot firewall, VPN, and security-related issues across on-premises and cloud platforms.
- Maintain accurate project and operational documentation in compliance with governance requirements.
- Process production change requests for firewall, zoning, VPN, and security group activities.
- Collaborate with customers, vendors, and internal teams to resolve security infrastructure issues.
- Provide knowledge transfer to security and network operations teams.
Requirements
- Degree, diploma, or equivalent training/experience in Computer Science or Information Technology.
- Minimum 4 years of recent experience implementing and supporting firewall rules, VPNs, AD, and DNS in large, complex enterprise environments.
- Strong knowledge of Fortinet, Palo Alto, and Cisco firewalls .
- Hands-on experience configuring and supporting VPNs (site-to-site, remote access, cloud-integrated).
- Experience configuring and supporting Web Application Firewalls (WAFs).
- Working knowledge of Azure (NSG/ASG) and AWS firewall/security controls .
- Experience with VMware NSX Distributed Firewall (DFW) including micro-segmentation.
- Familiarity with certificate management (PKI) as it applies to firewall/VPN authentication and SSL inspection.
- Strong understanding of networking and firewall principles, including segmentation, rule design, and security zoning.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and documentation skills.
- Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and priorities.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with F5 LTM or other load balancers.
- Experience supporting on-prem to cloud migrations and translating firewall/VPN/WAF rules to cloud equivalents.
- Certifications such as CCNA, Fortinet NSE, PCNSE (Palo Alto) or equivalent.
