Legal Counsel

Legal Counsel (rep term for a period up to 14 months) is responsible for the provision of a wide variety of legal services including drafting, reviewing and negotiating contracts; managing real estate and corporate transactions; and advising on other matters typical in a general solicitor practice.

What you do

  • Provide technical legal services, including negotiating legal rights and obligations on behalf of the VFPA, drafting contracts and other documents, and supporting the VFPA in legal and administrative proceedings.
  • Counsel the VFPA in the protection of its assets and its people.
  • Make recommendations as to the VFPA’s policies, practices and proposed courses of action, having regard to the legal and practical consequences.
  • Advise the VFPA on matters relating to its constituting documents, including their interpretation and application, ongoing review and recommendations of amendments.
  • Advise the VFPA on matters of statutory interpretation, their affect on its assets, people and liabilities.
  • Advise the VFPA on the current state of the law and on its rights and obligations.
  • Advise the VFPA on trends and new developments in the law that are of interest or concern.
  • Assist with the Legal Services business planning process and operating budget preparation and administration. Ensure that budgetary procedures are followed.
  • Participate in health and safety initiatives and comply with established policy, procedures and guidelines to protect yourself and your work colleagues. Report concerns, hazards, risks and incidents to management for follow-up.
  • Support organizational initiatives and values by attending VFPA activities and participating on cross-functional teams, as requested.
  • Perform other assigned duties as required.

What you bring

  • Law Degree from a recognized university.
  • Must be eligible for membership in the Law Society of B.C.
  • Must have a minimum of three years solicitor's experience in a law firm or corporate legal department, along with excellent communication and public speaking skills.
  • General corporate and real estate experience is required, and experience in First Nations and/or environmental law would be an asset.

Job Type: Exempt, Full-Time, Temporary, Hybrid

Working Environment: Normal office conditions.

Marine Transportation Security Clearance: Must obtain and maintain a valid Marine Transportation Security Clearance as this position requires access to restricted areas / information as defined by the Marine Transportation Security Regulations.

Location: Canadian-based employment; legal entitlement to work in Canada required. Background checks may be conducted.
