About the Role
The Automotive Mechanic Apprentice role is designed to provide hands-on training and practical experience in the maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of a wide range of vehicles, with a focus on diesel trucks and construction-related automotive equipment. This position aims to develop the apprentice's technical skills under the guidance of experienced mechanics, ensuring they gain comprehensive knowledge of automotive systems including brakes, suspension, fuel, and electrical systems. The apprentice will contribute to maintaining vehicle safety and performance standards, supporting the operational efficiency of construction projects across Quebec. Over time, the role prepares the individual to become a fully qualified automotive mechanic capable of independently handling complex repairs and maintenance tasks. The ultimate goal is to build a skilled professional who can ensure the reliability and longevity of automotive assets critical to the construction industry.
Responsibilities
- Assist senior mechanics in diagnosing mechanical and electrical issues in diesel trucks and other construction vehicles.
- Perform routine maintenance tasks such as oil changes, brake inspections, and suspension adjustments under supervision.
- Learn to disassemble and reassemble engines and fuel systems to understand their operation and repair requirements.
- Maintain accurate records of work performed, parts used, and service schedules to support fleet management.
- Adhere to safety protocols and environmental regulations while working in the workshop and on job sites.
Skills
The required skills such as automotive mechanics, brakes, diesel engines, suspension, diesel trucks, engine repair, electrical systems, automotive maintenance, and fuel systems are applied daily to diagnose and repair vehicle issues effectively. Apprentices use these skills to assist in maintaining the operational readiness of construction vehicles, ensuring they meet safety and performance standards. Preferred skills like familiarity with diagnostic tools and knowledge of safety regulations enhance the apprentice’s ability to work efficiently and compliantly. Communication and teamwork skills are essential as apprentices collaborate closely with senior mechanics and other team members. Continuous learning and adaptability are critical, as the apprentice applies theoretical knowledge to practical challenges in a dynamic work environment.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Basic understanding of automotive mechanics principles.
- Valid driver’s license suitable for operating diesel trucks or heavy vehicles.
- Willingness to learn and follow safety procedures in a workshop environment.
- Ability to work physically in a hands-on, sometimes demanding setting.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience or coursework related to automotive mechanics or diesel engine repair.
- Enrollment or completion of an automotive mechanic apprenticeship or technical training program.
- Familiarity with diagnostic tools and software used in vehicle maintenance.
- Knowledge of Canadian automotive safety and environmental standards.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
