About the Role
Intermediate Underwriter is part of the underwriting team and is responsible for evaluating, pricing, and managing moderate to complex personal insurance risks within Ontario. This role applies company underwriting guidelines, regulatory requirements, and underwriting authority to support profitability, growth, and customer retention. The position requires sound underwriting judgment, strong agent relationships, and independent decision-making within delegated limits.
Job Duties
- Utilize Policy Administration System (Cognition+), Policy Document Retention Program (Doc Record), Company SharePoint, CGI web applications, Inspection Administration system (MIRA), and other MS Office programs as required.
- Underwrite new business, policy changes, renewals and rewritten business accurately for personal lines products, including automobile, property, small farm, and personal umbrella insurance.
- Underwrite and evaluate new business, policy changes, renewals and rewritten business accurately for commercial lines products.
- Assess risk acceptability of agent submissions, applications, loss history, inspections, and third-party data.
- Apply underwriting rules, pricing models, and authority limits accurately.
- Identify coverage concerns and recommend underwriting or coverage solutions.
- Document underwriting rationale clearly and accurately in underwriting systems. Maintain continuous underwriting files. Research prior history, previous claims experience and license information.
- Prioritize tasks to meet service-level standards for turnaround time.
- Maintain FSRA (Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Ontario) expectations.
- Provide support to the Underwriting Manager and claims teams as required.
What You Bring
- Post- Secondary education in insurance, business, or in a related field.
- Relevant insurance experience in lieu of a degree.
- CIP designation or actively pursing completion of CIP.
- 3–5 years of personal lines underwriting experience, preferably within the Ontario market.
- Strong knowledge of Personal Lines products (Property, Liability & Auto), Risk concepts, Underwriting fundamentals.
- Proficiency with Rating systems, Underwriting platforms, SharePoint, MS Excel and Word.
- Strong ability to interpret reports (Applications, MVRs, property inspections, claims reports (Auto plus), credit scoring).
- Team-oriented, ability to work in both a group-setting and individually.
- Must possess a strong attention to detail, good organizational skills, ability to multi-task, prioritize and meet deadlines.
- Excellent analytical, decision-making, and communication skills.

This position is based at our head office in Cayuga, Ontario and offers a hybrid work arrangement. We support work-life balance while maintaining the collaboration needed for team success. The hybrid arrangement must be approved by the Underwriting Manager and may be changed based on business needs.
