Hard Surface Modeller

Wētā FX is currently taking applications from experienced Hard Surface Modellers to join our team onsite in Wellington or Vancouver on shows delivering this year.
The Models Department is responsible for the creation of digital assets across all shows. Within this, Hard Surface Modellers focus on building vehicles, architecture, props, armour and more. We’re seeking artists with 5+ years experience in VFX production, with the ability to create photo realistic models from 2D reference, previs, photogrammetry and scan data. Artists are also responsible for delivering clean, well‑constructed assets that meet the technical requirements of departments such as Rigging, FX, Layout and Lookdev.
We’re interested in hearing from Hard Surface Modellers who are open to shorter, show‑based contracts. These opportunities are expected to sit in the region of three to six months. While final contract lengths are still to be confirmed, this reflects the current production requirements we are looking to support, with potential extension opportunities on upcoming shows.
Our Successful Modeller Will
- Have an impressive reel showing a wide range of hard surface models with clean and efficient topology and UV’s
- Have a great eye for matching supplied reference and detailing to a photoreal result.
- Demonstrate knowledge and experience using Maya efficiently in a production environment (please note that due to our pipeline Maya knowledge is considered a must)
- Have experience with Mudbox or Z-Brush
- Be comfortable taking direction and working independently while being an effective team player
- Have strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
- Understand Linux desktop and system commands to perform daily tasks comfortably
- Have excellent organisational skills with the ability to meet deadlines
- Be a clear and confident communicator
Additional Beneficial Experience
- Experience in other modelling disciplines, eg characters, creatures or environments
- The ability to script in MEL and/or Python
- Houdini, Reality Capture and Blender
Pay range: CAD $43.00–$54.00 per hour, depending on skills and experience, based on a 40-hour work week. The amount of hours scheduled per week may vary based on role and business needs. The rate offered will take into account an individual's job-related knowledge, skills and experience, among other factors.
