Assistant Superintendent

Position: Assistant Superintendent

Job Type: Site-based, Full-time.

Location: Eastern Canada. Our head office is located in Hamilton, Ontario.

Salary Range: $80,000-110,000

Key Responsibilities of the Role

Project Execution & Field Operations

  • Support the Superintendent in managing, planning, coordinating, and overseeing daily construction activities.
  • Assist with workforce, equipment, material, and subcontractor coordination to ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and on schedule.
  • Monitor field operations to ensure compliance with project specifications, quality standards, and company procedures.

Leadership & Communication

  • Provide day-to-day support and guidance to field crews and project personnel.
  • Foster strong communication and collaboration between project teams, subcontractors, clients, and management.
  • Promote a positive, productive, and team-oriented work environment.
  • Proactively identify potential problems, conflicts, scheduling constraints and assist in resolving these issues.

Health, Safety & Environmental Compliance

  • Champion SB Canada's "We Care" safety culture and ensure compliance with all health, safety, environmental, and client requirements.
  • Participate in site inspections, safety meetings, incident investigations, and corrective action follow-up.
  • Support hazard identification and risk mitigation activities on-site.

Project Controls & Reporting

  • Assist with tracking project progress, productivity, and daily activities.
  • Maintain accurate project documentation, including daily reports, production records, and safety documentation.
  • Support project planning, scheduling, and reporting requirements.
  • Ensure project costs are maintained within budget and actively pursue opportunities to use resources more efficiently.

Continuous Improvement

  • Identify opportunities to improve safety, productivity, quality, and operational efficiency.
  • Contribute to lessons learned and continuous improvement initiatives across projects.

Qualifications – What Will Make You Successful

  • Education: Diploma or Degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Engineering Technology, or a related field is considered an asset. Equivalent combinations of education and field experience will be considered.
  • Experience : 2+ years of experience in construction operations, field supervision, or project coordination. Experience in heavy civil, geotechnical, foundation, infrastructure, or related construction sectors is considered an asset. Experience coordinating crews, equipment, subcontractors, and project activities in a field environment.
  • Soft skills: Strong leadership and team-building skills. Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities. Strong problem-solving and decision-making capabilities. Ability to prioritize tasks and perform effectively in a fast-paced environment. High level of organization and attention to detail. Positive attitude with the ability to build strong working relationships and eagerness to learn. Comfortable working with unionized trades and workforce.
  • Preferred skills: Knowledge of construction methods, scheduling, and field operations. Ability to read and interpret drawings, specifications, and project documents. Experience using Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, and Outlook considered an asset. Familiarity with project management and construction software is considered an asset. Understanding of productivity tracking, cost awareness, and project controls.
  • Required designations or certifications: Valid driver's licence and ability to travel as required. First Aid/CPR certification considered an asset. CSTS, WHMIS, or other construction safety certifications considered an asset.
