Position Description
A temporary full time (1.0) Outreach Teacher is required by School District No. 60 (Peace River North) effective September 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027).
In partnership
with Doig River First Nation, School District 60 is seeking a compassionate,
innovative, and culturally responsive educator with proven teaching experience
to support Doig River First Nation students. Operating from the Doig River
First Nation Learning Centre, this position focuses on re-engaging students who
are not currently attending school, students who demonstrate inconsistent
attendance patterns and those that require extra academic support. The
successful candidate will be responsible for building and developing a program that addresses academic,
social-emotional, and cultural needs of students while creating pathways back
to the traditional school system or alternative educational options.
This role requires regular travel to and from the Doig River First Nation community .
Mileage will be reimbursed in accordance with district policy.
The Doig River First Nation (DRFN) is home to the Tsáá ʔ ché ne dane, a proud Dane-zaa people whose ancestral lands span the upper Peace River region of British Columbia and Alberta. Their traditional territory extends in all directions from Gat Tah Kwą̂, now known as the city of Fort St. John. Today, DRFN members are active participants in the modern economy while continuing to preserve and practice their unique language, culture, and traditions ( Doig River First Nation. (n.d.). Tsáá? Key Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and continuously evolve a program tailored to support student re-engagement and skill development.
- Develop and deliver individualized and group learning plans.
- Build trusting relationships with students, families, and community members.
- Incorporate culturally relevant and land-based learning experiences into teaching.
- Facilitate open and consistent communication with school district personnel to address student academic needs.
- Create a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment.
- Collaborate with Doig River First Nation leadership and school district personnel.
- Promote consistent attendance, motivation, and student confidence.
- Use trauma-informed and strength-based approaches to guide learning.
- Support transitions back to school or into alternative education placements. Maintain ongoing communication with families and provide regular progress updates.
Qualifications and Experience
- Valid BC Ministry of Education Teaching Certificate (or eligible for)
- Qualifications and demonstrated ability to teach the identified subjects at the middle years level
- Experience with universal design and differentiation to meet the diverse needs of students
- Excellent interpersonal, communications, collaboration and organization skills
- Experience/training/knowledge of Social Emotional Learning. Demonstrated ability to create a positive classroom community contributing to a safe, caring, and healthy school where every student feels a sense of belonging
- Strong belief in the philosophy of inclusion and the potential of all students to learn
- Understanding of the BC Curriculum and ability to plan both short-term and long-term in consideration of class composition
- Willingness to work in a collaborative model with staff on the foundation of enhancing student learning
- Demonstrated use of classroom management practices that are pro-active and maintain student dignity
- Demonstrated use of assessment practices that promote student learning and maintain student dignity
- Experience working with Indigenous Students, families, and communities
- Ability to adapt teaching methods to diverse learner needs
- Understanding of trauma-informed and culturally responsive practices
- Commitment to Truth and Reconciliation in education
- Preference will be given to qualified applicants of Indigenous ancestry
Preferred
- Experience with alternative education or outreach.
- Familiarity with land-based education and Indigenous knowledge systems.
- Knowledge of the culture, language, and traditions of Doig River First Nation or other Treaty 8 communities.
- Additional qualifications
in special education, counseling, or social-emotional learning are assets

Compensation
$2000 relocation allowance for teachers from BC, AB and Yukon and up to $4000 for teachers from other areas.
$3,500 recruitment allowance (paid over 10 months of the school year, based on the FTE)
Salary as per collective agreement. Current salary grid is $72,720 - $118,770
Benefits as per collective agreement with option to enroll in medical, dental, extended health, and group life insurance. Benefits are employer paid based on FTE.
