Legal Officer III (Litigation)

Overview

Are you a litigation lawyer with experience conducting trials and other hearings in the civil courts and tribunals of British Columbia? Do you have an interest in workers' compensation or occupational health and safety? As a Legal Officer III, you'll conduct litigation on behalf of WorkSafeBC, including drafting pleadings and other documents, and preparing for and appearing in civil courts and tribunals on behalf of WorkSafeBC. Where you’ll work

At WorkSafeBC, we offer a hybrid work model that combines working remotely, and in our offices based on the operational needs of the position.

In this role, you'll work in our Richmond office at a minimum of two days per week.

What you’ll do

  • Prepare reasoned and persuasive written submissions and correspondence
  • Conduct trials and other hearings in the civil courts in BC
  • Represent WorkSafeBC in hearings before administrative or regulatory tribunals, and proceedings before government agencies
  • Provide direction and advice, and generally act as counsel, relative to the Workers Compensation Act and regulations under that statute
  • Provide advice in the form of opinions on legislation, WorkSafeBC activities, evidentiary, legal, and policy matters
  • Consistently models the appropriate level of organizational behaviours expected of all WorkSafeBC employees: responsive, respectful, fair, collaborative, accountable, and forward thinking.

Your background and experience

  • A degree in law or related degrees
  • A member in good standing with the Law Society of BC
  • A minimum of five years of recent related experience, within the last eight years, of litigating and practicing law in various courts and other tribunals in BC

We’ll consider equivalent combinations of education and experience.

  • Consent to a criminal record check and successfully meet the legal requirements under the Criminal Records Review Act to work with children and/or vulnerable adults.

Salary

$53.08 - $68.61 hourly
