Your Role

Victim Service Workers support individuals and families who have been impacted by crime. We help people navigate the criminal legal system, understand their rights as victims within it, and provide advocacy, short-term counselling, information, safety planning, and help accessing community supports and services. We help people apply for protective orders, and may help them navigate times of emergency and crisis. We strive to work in a compassionate, client-centered, and culturally responsive way. We recognize the ongoing impacts of colonization and systemic inequities experienced by Indigenous Peoples and the resulting over-representation of Indigenous people in the criminal legal system, and are committed to providing culturally responsive support.

Victim Service Workers interacts regularly with other players in the in the criminal legal system, including RCMP, Public Prosecution Services of Canada, Yukon Community Corrections, Justice Wellness Centre and Youth Probation. This position works in Dawson City, and travels periodically to other Yukon communities to provide Victim Services support.

Essential Qualifications

Please submit your resume clearly demonstrating how you meet the following qualifications. Please note selection for further consideration will be based solely on the information you provide in your resume.

  • Demonstrated, verifiable experience supporting and advocating for Yukon First Nations and Indigenous peoples across Canada, as well as LGBTQI2S+, BIPOC, and newcomer communities, including applied knowledge of Yukon First Nations cultures, histories, and service needs in professional settings.
  • Post-secondary degree or equivalent in social work, psychology, criminology, or related discipline. Coursework combined with other relevant experience may be equally considered.
  • Demonstrated experience providing client-centered risk assessment, crisis intervention, safety planning, and case management as a front-line worker; especially for victims of crime, sexualized violence, intimate partner violence, and/or child abuse.
  • Considerable frontline experience delivering client-centred services, including conducting risk assessments, crisis intervention, safety planning, and case management, with a focus on clients affected by crime, sexualized violence, intimate partner violence, and/or child abuse.
  • Experience providing information and support to victims of crime would be an asset.
  • Experience or course work indicating knowledge of the Justice system would be an asset.
  • In addition to the above, candidates will be assessed on their French and English language proficiency.

Candidates who have education, training and/or experience equivalent to the essential qualifications listed above may be equally considered.

  • Ability to deliver culturally responsive service and commitment to building individual cultural competencies.
  • Ability to provide professional case management from a victim-centered lens and to provide client-centered crisis intervention, de-escalation, and counseling.
  • Excellent written and oral communication and conflict resolution skills.
  • Knowledge of support programs within the Yukon and the ability to work collaboratively with service providers and rural communities.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to balance professional ethics and personal boundaries in a small community.
  • A commitment to decolonization and demonstrated ongoing personal learning.

Les intervenants des services aux victimes soutiennent les personnes et les familles touchées par la criminalité. Nous aidons les personnes à s’orienter dans le système de justice pénale, à comprendre leurs droits en tant que victimes, et nous offrons de la défense des droits, du counseling à court terme, de l’information, de la planification de la sécurité et de l’aide pour accéder aux services et ressources communautaires. Nous aidons également les personnes à présenter des demandes d’ordonnances de protection et pouvons les accompagner en situation d’urgence ou de crise. Nous nous efforçons de travailler avec compassion, en mettant l’accent sur le client et en adoptant une approche culturellement adaptée. Nous reconnaissons les impacts continus de la colonisation et des inégalités systémiques vécues par les peuples autochtones, ainsi que leur surreprésentation dans le système de justice pénale, et nous nous engageons à offrir un soutien adapté à leur réalité culturelle.

Les intervenants des services aux victimes collaborent régulièrement avec d’autres acteurs du système de justice pénale, notamment la GRC, le Service des poursuites pénales du Canada, les services correctionnels communautaires du Yukon, le Centre de mieux-être en justice et les services de probation pour les jeunes. Ce poste est basé à Dawson City et nécessite des déplacements périodiques dans d’autres collectivités du Yukon pour offrir des services aux victimes.

Qualifications essentielles

  • Diplôme postsecondaire ou équivalent en travail social, psychologie, criminologie ou discipline connexe. Une combinaison de formation et d’expérience pertinente pourrait être considérée.
  • Expérience démontrée dans l’évaluation des risques, l’intervention en situation de crise, la planification de la sécurité et la gestion de cas dans un contexte de première ligne, notamment auprès des victimes de crimes, de violence sexualisée, de violence conjugale et/ou de maltraitance envers les enfants.
  • Expérience significative en prestation de services centrés sur le client, incluant les évaluations des risques, les interventions en situation de crise, la planification de la sécurité et la gestion de cas.
  • Une expérience en information et soutien aux victimes de crimes constitue un atout.
  • Une expérience ou une formation liée au système de justice constitue un atout.
  • Atout : expérience démontrée dans la prestation de services de communication liés à la justice.
