Biomedical Support Worker

Applications are invited from individuals with a scientific background for the above post in the Haematology/Blood Transfusion Laboratory. This is a busy and progressive department based in the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Campus.

The successful applicant will have the opportunity to work in the blood transfusion section of a busy department within a large teaching hospital.

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:

• This is a full time permanent post (36)
• The hours will be variable and will consist 36.0 hours over a 7-day week. On a 24-hour shift system will be in operation.
• You will be based at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital

Key Responsibilities

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is seeking a motivated and reliable individual to join the laboratory team. You will play a key role in supporting the safe and effective handling, preparation and transportation of samples and blood products across the service.

Responsibilities include preparing and registering samples for analysis, ensuring accurate sample identification and documentation at all times. Duties will include checking the integrity and quality of samples in line with the laboratory’s zero tolerance policy, centrifuging and separating samples into secondary tubes for testing, and organising samples for storage and retention in accordance with departmental procedures.

The role also involves processing samples for referral to external reference laboratories, ensuring all transfers are accurately documented and carried out in line with packaging and transport policies and procedures. A key aspect of the position is the transportation of blood stocks directly to clinical areas between hospital satellite fridges and the laboratory.

You will be expected to adhere to all relevant departmental, directorate, hospital and regulatory policies and procedures, including Standard Operating Procedures, Quality Management Policies, External Quality Assessment and Internal Quality Control requirements, Health and Safety legislation, Risk Management processes, NHSGGC policies and current data protection legislation.

Applicants should have excellent organisational skills, the ability to manage time and resources effectively, and a commitment to maintaining high standards of accuracy and patient safety within a busy laboratory environment.

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:

• 3 Highers at Grade C or above, which should include either Chemistry or Biology together with Maths, or SVQ3, or equivalent.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to understand and follow Standard Operating Procedures and NHSGGC Policies and Protocols.
• Ability to understand and follow confidentiality policies.
• High awareness of Infection Control Policies and Procedures.
