POSITION: One (1) Supply Position ESL Instructor

LOCATION: Working at the designated DSBN ESL program location - 3855 St. Peter Avenue, Niagara Falls, Ontario, or other DSBN location as assigned.

RATE OF PAY: $31.10 per hour

SCHEDULE : Working up to 35 hours per week - Starting September 1, 2026 anticipated until March 31, 2027 . (Program closed during Winter Break and March Break).

Position Summary

The ESL Instructor, working within the Community Education department, will instruct ESL classrooms, teaching English to Learners CLB Levels Pre-5+. The role will be based in Niagara Falls and/or St. Catharines and will operate during business hours, instructing newcomers to Canada.

This position is a temporary Supply position until March 2027 with possibility of renewal based on continued funding and enrolment.

This position is temporary and funded until March 31st 2027.

The preferred candidate will demonstrate strengths in the following areas:

• Strong understanding of application of Canadian Language Benchmarks
• Familiarity and experience with Portfolio Based Language Assessment (PBLA) is an asset
• Exceptional customer service skills with a focus on professionalism, an excitement for learning and a positive customer experience
• Ability to build professional relationships with learners, follow up and maintain relationships
• Demonstrated ability to integrate employment-focused language instruction
• Knowledge of local labour market trends and newcomer employment pathways
• Experience coordinating with Employment Ontario (EO) and community organizations supporting newcomers and language learners
• Strong understanding of outcomes-based programming and learner progression tracking
• Experience with online, hybrid, or blended ESL delivery, including LMS platforms such as Avenue.ca
Be adaptable, flexible and driven to achieve positive personal and team outcomes

Duties and Responsibilities

• Lead multi-level ESL classrooms, delivering CLB-aligned instruction that integrates employment-related language, workplace competencies, and settlement outcomes, supporting learners’ transition to employment and community integration.
• Work with multi-barriered, multi-cultural clientele in a classroom setting
• Implement Portfolio-Based Language Assessment (PBLA) to assess, track, and document learner progress and outcomes in alignment with Ministry guidelines
• Integrate employment-related content and tasks into lesson planning across all CLB levels
• Maintain client records and report accordingly
• Use of technologies; MS programs, HARTs, communicate and keep documentation, video conferencing for distance meetings, using outlook, OneDrive and other online programs
• Maintain accurate, complete, and timely data entry in HARTs, including learner attendance, progression, and outcomes
• Ensure data is updated according to defined deadlines
• Work independently with autonomy to run your own classroom
• Collaborate with organizations to network and build relationships
• Conduct workshop facilitation to external organizations and clientele
• Remain flexible and accept other duties as assigned

Skills, Qualifications and Education Requirements

• A minimum of a university degree in a relevant field of education
• Successful completion of the TESL Ontario Certification is a mandatory requirement
• A minimum of 1-2 years experience in instruction/facilitation, ideally with newcomers
• Demonstrated experience using or willing to learn PBLA methodology, HARTs system, Learning Management Systems (e.g., Avenue.ca) , and MS Office
• Able to work in a multicultural setting while managing various individual needs of participants throughout a lesson
• Experience in case management, addressing barriers, goal-setting, and referrals to services would be considered assets
Able to obtain a clear Police Vulnerable Sector Check
