Legal Assistant

Overview

The Legal Assistant is responsible to coordinate the provision of legal services as directed by the Legal Counsel. The Legal Assistant will support the coordination of agency legal services by preparing relevant legal documentation and correspondence; conducting legal research; and assisting with trial preparation, or any other tasks as assigned including disclosure and access to personal information requests.

Qualifications

• A Law Clerk, Legal Assistant or Paralegal Diploma.
• Or a college diploma (two year minimum) in a field related to Law.
• However, other combinations of skills, education and experience that are relevant may be considered.
• Have a class ‘G’ Ontario Driver’s License, access to a personal vehicle and be able to travel.

Skills, Knowledge, & Abilities

• Assist counsel by preparing relevant legal documentation.
• Ensure that Court forms are accurate and completed in a timely manner.
• Draft various types of legal documentation, including facta, briefs, affidavits, etc. as assigned by in-house legal counsel.
• Obtain further information where necessary to ensure comprehensive legal documentation is prepared.
• Assemble documentary evidence.
• Draft correspondence.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

• Given the traditional practices of the Anishinabek, from time-to-time exposure to wood smoke and the burning of sacred medicines, including tobacco, sweet grass, sage, or cedar, may occur within the work setting.
