Maintenance Superintendent

Birch Mountain Enterprises (BME) is hiring a permanent, full-time, experienced Maintenance Superintendent immediately.  This position is based out of our Fort McKay Incubator Park, on a schedule of 7 days on, 7 days off.

Job Summary:
Birch Mountain Enterprises LP is seeking an experienced Maintenance Superintendent to provide leadership and oversight of our maintenance operations. This senior operational role is responsible for ensuring our maintenance shops, field maintenance activities, personnel, tools, systems, and resources operate safely, efficiently, and effectively to maximize equipment availability and support the needs of Operations.

The Maintenance Superintendent will lead the day-to-day execution of maintenance activities, ensuring work is appropriately prioritized, planned, assigned, completed, and documented. Working closely with Operations and other departments, the Superintendent will balance equipment availability, operational priorities, preventative maintenance requirements, safety, quality, cost control, and longer-term fleet needs.

This position requires a strong understanding of heavy-duty and automotive maintenance environments, combined with proven leadership experience managing maintenance teams and shop operations. The successful candidate will be comfortable moving between strategic planning and hands-on operational oversight, including supporting complex equipment diagnosis and troubleshooting when required.
The Maintenance Superintendent will also play an important role in improving maintenance processes, developing employees and supervisors, managing departmental resources and budgets, leveraging maintenance technology and data, and identifying opportunities to reduce downtime and improve the overall reliability and performance of BME's fleet.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead daily shop and field maintenance operations to maximize equipment availability, productivity, quality, and return on company assets.
• Provide leadership, direction, coaching, and performance management to maintenance supervision and employees.
• Coordinate with Operations to establish repair priorities and ensure appropriate equipment is available to support current and upcoming work.
• Monitor equipment condition, maintenance requirements, repair progress, and downtime, proactively addressing issues that may impact operations.
• Oversee preventative and corrective maintenance activities and support equipment diagnosis and troubleshooting where required.
• Ensure maintenance activities, repairs, inspections, and related records are accurately documented within TAG and BME maintenance systems.
• Continuously evaluate shop processes, workflow, staffing, tools, technology, and maintenance practices to improve efficiency and reduce equipment downtime.
• Manage departmental budgets, resources, inventory, and expenditures with a focus on cost control and responsible use of company resources.
• Ensure maintenance shops and field activities meet BME safety, quality, environmental, and regulatory requirements.
• Conduct field and shop inspections and assessments to verify compliance with company policies, procedures, and safe work practices.
• Work collaboratively with HSE to maintain and continuously improve safe maintenance practices and procedures.
• Support recruitment, retention, training, succession planning, and development of maintenance personnel.
• Monitor departmental performance and provide relevant reporting, analysis, and recommendations to senior leadership.
• Identify emerging technologies, tools, equipment, and alternative maintenance practices that may improve reliability, productivity, or cost effectiveness.
• Build strong working relationships with Operations and internal customers to ensure maintenance services effectively support business requirements.
• Lead by example and promote a culture of safety, accountability, teamwork, continuous improvement, and operational excellence.

Qualifications & Experience:

• Minimum 5–7 years of progressive leadership or supervisory experience, preferably within a heavy-duty fleet, industrial, transportation, or similar maintenance environment.
• HET Journeyman certification with a strong working knowledge of heavy-duty and automotive mechanical maintenance and repair, including experience overseeing a maintenance shop.
• Demonstrated experience leading maintenance teams and managing competing operational priorities.
• Experience with maintenance planning, budgeting, cost control, equipment reliability, and resource allocation.
• Formal leadership training is considered an asset.
• Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office and experience with maintenance or enterprise management systems. Experience with TAG, SharePoint, or Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central is an asset.
• Valid driver's license with an acceptable driver's abstract.
