Location: Vancouver, BC, Canada
Employment Type: Temporary Full Time
Duration: 8-12 months months
Workplace Type: Hybrid
About our Vancouver Office
Located in the heart of downtown Vancouver, between the Pacific Ocean and the Coast Mountains, Teck’s Corporate Office sits in one of Canada’s most culturally diverse cities.
Surrounded by world-renowned nature and globally inspired cuisine, the office brings together many of Teck’s corporate functions - all working toward Teck’s purpose of providing the essential resources the world relies on.
Role Overview
Reporting to the Regional Lead, Performance and Improvement, the Improvement Specialist Co-op supports the enablement of Teck’s continuous improvement portfolio across all our operations, helping sites focus improvement effort on the most material performance gaps. Our team sets the standards, methods and analytical support that sites leverage to run their own improvement programs - and steps into execution selectively, where a site needs support to unlock priority initiatives. The successful candidate will have the chance to collaborate with senior leaders across the company, and work with experts in our corporate, operations & maintenance groups. We are specifically looking for an individual with outstanding analytical skills to tackle large and ambiguous business problems, and superb interpersonal skills to influence cross-functional teams they do not directly control.
Candidates must be enrolled in a Canadian post-secondary institution for the full duration of the co-op term and plan to return to their studies upon completion for at least one academic term. If you are not currently located near the work location, you must be willing to commute or temporarily relocate for the duration of the term. A valid study permit and studentship letter will be required where applicable.
Don’t miss out on this opening to be part of one of Canada’s leading mining companies and join our team!
Key Responsibilities
- Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
- Be the primary source of reliable data and rock-solid analysis, providing the fact base the Performance & Improvement team uses to make decisions in real time
- Support the interpretation of site, regional and cross-asset operational performance across cost, reliability, throughput and risk
- Help synthesize complex operational trends into clear, decision-relevant insight, distinguishing short-term variability from long-term structural issues
- Support the framing of operational risks, constraints and upside opportunities, and articulate the assumptions, sensitivities and implications behind them
- Develop operational content and analysis for ELT, Investment Committee and Board materials, framing clear arguments and trade-offs alongside inputs from Finance, CI / OpEx, IT and Business Planning
- Support coordination and communication on large-scale, cross-functional operational efforts
- Provide targeted analytical support to sites — restriction, bottleneck, variability and statistical analysis — to diagnose performance gaps and identify improvement opportunities
- Support the creation and application of bottleneck and restriction analysis tools that focus improvement effort where value is highest
- Support standardization of CI approaches, metrics and reporting in line with enterprise guidance, and reinforce consistent application of CI methodologies across sites and initiatives
- Support training and enablement of site teams on CI implementation toolkits and methods, reinforcing disciplined use of the tools to sustain improvement outcomes
- Help ensure CI efforts are clearly linked to operational performance objectives rather than activity-based measures, and support integration of CI insight into regional performance narratives and executive materials
- Build performance tracking dashboards using tools like Excel and PowerBI, and quantify value delivery using Value Driver Trees and customized KPI dashboards
- Collaborate with site counterparts, sharing your skills and building relationships across Teck’s operations, using your network to ensure analysis and methodology are firmly based on the real-world the sites operate in
Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree or equivalent experience in mining engineering (preference), chemical engineering / metallurgical engineering (preference), geological, mechanical, industrial or civil engineering
- Strong quantitative and analytical skills, including comfort with statistical techniques and large operational datasets
- Excellence in effective communication: articulating key messages & storytelling
- Adaptable: comfortable with working in ambiguous and unstructured settings
- Problem Solving: able to prioritize and frame complex problems while identifying solutions quickly
- Bias for action: seeks to move from analysis to action as quickly as possible
- Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills and ability to rapidly build and nurture working relationships, including the ability to influence without direct authority
- Solid understanding of mining industry fundamentals
- Able to articulate complex concepts clearly for audiences with diverse backgrounds (technical and non-technical)
- Comfortable in discussions with Senior leadership and working in ambiguous, rapidly changing settings
- Able to work effectively independently as well as part of the team
- Proven ability to learn innovative technologies and platforms quickly, accurately, and efficiently
- Anticipated travel requirement is up to 50%, primarily for site engagement and performance reviews
- Working experience within mining industry or in the deployment of Continuous Improvement programs would be considered an asset
- Fluency in Spanish is an asset given the role’s exposure to LATAM operations
