The Opportunity

We are seeking a Assistant Vice President, Executive Underwriter - Programs with extensive Property Expertise to play a key role in the profitable growth and strategic development of our Programs’ portfolio.

This role sits at the intersection of program underwriting, portfolio management, and specialized property risk, with a strong emphasis on designing, scaling, and optimizing property-driven programs across niche and emerging industries.

The successful candidate will bring a blend of technical property underwriting expertise and program leadership experience, with the ability to build, evaluate, and evolve programs from both a portfolio and individual risk perspective. This includes influencing underwriting strategy, enhancing governance frameworks, and partnering with MGAs and brokers to deliver sustainable, profitable growth.

Key Responsibilities

Program & Portfolio Leadership

• Lead underwriting oversight of a portfolio of delegated and non-delegated authority programs, with a strong emphasis on property and property-led programs
• Conduct holistic program reviews, including profitability, rate adequacy, CAT exposure, and long-term sustainability
• Drive portfolio segmentation strategies, identifying growth opportunities within specialized property niches (e.g., emerging industries, complex risk segments)
• Contribute to the creation, launch, and scaling of new programs, including development of underwriting guidelines and product wordings

Technical Property Underwriting Expertise

• Underwrite and guide complex commercial property risks, including large and non-standard exposures
• Apply deep understanding of property coverage, wordings, CAT modelling, and facultative reinsurance structures
• Support program partners in risk selection, pricing strategy, and coverage structuring to ensure alignment with Liberty’s appetite
• Provide technical leadership on large accounts, high-value assets, and specialized property exposures

Broker & MGA Relationship Management

• Build and manage strong relationships with MGAs, brokers, and capacity partners
• Act as a trusted advisor, influencing underwriting practices and program strategies
• Collaborate on market expansion opportunities, including new distribution channels and niche sectors
• Ensure consistent service delivery and alignment of underwriting standards across delegated authorities

Governance, Audit & Performance Management

• Lead the review and governance of MGA and delegated underwriting authority agreements, ensuring compliance and alignment with risk appetite
• Oversee and enhance program audit protocols, including underwriting quality, claims trends, and financial performance
• Monitor portfolio performance using data-driven insights, actuarial inputs, and claims analysis
• Identify emerging trends and proactively implement corrective actions and underwriting adjustments

Strategy, Innovation & Growth

• Contribute to the national Programs strategy, with a focus on property-led growth segments
• Identify opportunities to expand into specialized industries (e.g., cannabis, manufacturing, niche property sectors)
• Champion innovation in program design, underwriting processes, and market positioning
• Support development of standardized frameworks, playbooks, and scalable underwriting models

Cross-Functional Collaboration

• Partner closely with Actuarial, Risk Services, Claims, Reinsurance, and Legal to drive profitability
• Translate technical insights into actionable strategies for program partners and internal stakeholders
• Support internal knowledge sharing and elevate technical underwriting capability across the Programs team
• Applicable experience in casualty and/or financial lines, given that property-centric programs may include some of these elements

Skills & Qualifications

• 7+ years of commercial P&C underwriting experience, with a strong emphasis on property underwriting and programs/portfolio management
• Building or managing insurance programs or niche segments
• Underwriting complex property risks and large accounts
• Working with MGAs and delegated authority models (a preference)
• Strong understanding of property wordings, CAT exposures, and reinsurance structures
• Portfolio analytics, profitability metrics, and program performance tracking
• Drive profitable growth within specialized segments
• Balance technical underwriting discipline with commercial strategy
• Influence stakeholders across brokers, MGAs, and internal teams

Liberty Mutual Canada is committed to pay transparency and fair, equitable hiring. For roles based in Ontario and British Columbia we publish a Target Hiring Range in compliance with the Ontario Pay Transparency Act and the BC Pay Transparency Act.

Target Hiring Range: CAD $140,000 – 190,0000

This range represents the expected annual base salary for this role, however, offers above the published maximum may be approved with appropriate business authorization. Final offers will be determined based on each candidate's qualifications, relevant experience, internal equity, and the needs of the role. The posted range does not include variable compensation (bonus), allowances, or benefits. We encourage all qualified candidates to apply.
