Job Summary
The Project Manager – EPC is accountable to the Vice President, Projects, for ensuring assigned projects are completed on time, within budget, and meeting the technical requirements of the contract to the satisfaction of the client.
This high visibility position is ideal for a project manager who strives on delivering complex engineering-based projects to tight schedules and tight budgets by focusing on the objectives and by implementing solid plans to achieve them. As the project manager, accountability for overall project performance is important to you and you work with your team to deliver to clear scope, cost and schedule goals.
The Project Manager – EPC (PM) is the project leader and focal point for all project activities from start to finish, including planning, reporting, engineering, procurement, construction, facility start up and final handover. The PM is supported by and delegates to the Project team members key responsibilities for design based on project, working more closely with the team on matters of quality assurance, schedule maintenance, and budget adherence.
The PM arranges and manages all project phases and monitors the activities that are delegated to the Project team members.
The PM shall be fully independent in all client-facing requirements and shall understand and uphold the contract, managing for profit and positive cash flow, where EPC projects can exceed $10M contract value.
Key Responsibilities
Project Management & Delivery
· Manage the execution of complex and/or multiple concurrent projects from initiation through to completion.
o Review and understand the contract for projects assigned; prepare and issue a project work plan & schedule
o In cooperation with the Project Leads, monitor the project risk mitigation plan; regularly review, manage and control the commercial risk for the project;
· Provide leadership in resolving complex design, construction and logistical challenges.
o Escalate critical risks with recommended solutions and mitigation strategies.
· Oversee the preparation and approval of the project schedule.
o Establish procedures for monitoring, controlling and reporting progress for the entire job.
o Review and adjust project activities to suit actual project needs.
· Create the master document register for deliverables with the project leads and audit the development of deliverables (specifications and drawings, etc.).
· Proactively identify, assess and manage risks and opportunities across the project lifecycle.
· Determine, track and control the project cost and hours budgets, including resource assignment demands for completion of the project work on time.
· Monitor project forecasts to deliver project within budget.
· Establish the site office and coordinate all contractor site activities,; Coordinate all logistics and scheduling of project specialists for site.
· Monitor the development of the Operating and Maintenance Manual(s) and assembly of all suppliers’ documentation for final project completion & acceptance.
· Establish the Construction Execution Strategy, including the construction schedule and sequencing to be used for the design basis and procurement plan.
Financial Management
· Oversee the preparation and approval of the project budget.
o Implement the procedures for controlling and reporting costs for all aspects of the job.
o Approve all invoicing and back-up for issuing to client. Monitor all invoices and payments. Ensure adherence to the cash flow plan.
· Prepare the project procurement strategy and plan; initiate and manage the RFP process, including the preparation of POs and sub-contracts (with the Manager of Procurement)
· Manage the project financial performance, analyze variances and implement corrective actions.
· Implement and manage change order procedures both internally and externally. Monitor contractual requirements and recommend adjustments as needed; identify and control commercial risk and project scope creep.
· Provide clear, timely and comprehensive financial and project status reports to senior leadership.
· Encourage the project “internal customers” to realize budget and schedule savings while respecting the contract requirements.
Client Relationship Management & Communications
· Establish and maintain practical, periodic meetings with the Client and / or Owner.
o Act as a key point of contact for project issues, escalations and strategic decisions.
· Ensure that procedures are in place to assure quality products, services (internal and external) and performance; audit the resolution of project non-conformities.
· Conduct regular project review meetings (internal).
o Lead contractor walk-throughs, progress reviews and deficiency resolution.
· Provide guidance and mentorship to the Project Team, including Engineers,Designers, project support resources and other junior team members.
o Support the Project Lead’s “internal customer” (team) dependencies and the common goal to strive for mutual success;
o help to mitigate any conflicts (between engineers and designers, discipline groups or departments)
· Effectively communicate all aspects of project progress directly with the client and/or owner
· Ensure effective communications with Others (e.g. architect, engineer, JV partners), in cooperation with the Project Technical Leads on technical matters
· Document meeting minutes, correspondence, telephone calls, daily diaries
· Build working files and project history in cooperation with the Project Coordinators nad Leads.
· Audit the Project Lead’s documentation coordination for the project multi-disciplinary design reviews.
· Manage all hardware/installation contracts.
Leadership
· Identify both project and project team member successes and promote those successes as learning opportunities.
· Audit the Project Team’s development of lessons learned, promote any relevant lessons learned to Managers within the Company, as appropriate
Preferred Qualifications.
· 15-20 years experience within a multi-disciplined EPC project environment for a process facility, industrial construction or similar field.
· 5-10 years of Technical (Engineering Design) experience with management or lead roles from concept design to detail design for construction.
· 5-10 years as a Fabrication & Construction experience, including direct site experience during the execution.
· 5 years experience in Project Controls functions, including planning, scheduling, cost control and documentation management
· Post secondary degree/diploma in an engineering or construction management related field.
· Knowledge of planning, estimating, project controls, records management, purchasing and QHSE practices, including other standard project management, contract and construction documentation practices
· Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to lead a team of engineers, designers, technical, clerical and trades personnel, including subcontractors, supplies and service providers.
· Knowledge of industry regulations and acceptable work practices
· Computer literate and comfortable with Email, Excel and other Microsoft programs.
· Ability to travel locally and internationally when required for the project, while extended assignments is considered an asset.
· Fluent in English, while additional languages are preferred due to our international clients.
