Task Description We are seeking Board Members to Join the Yukon Association for Birth Choices. After 15 Years advocating as the Canadian Midwives Association Yukon to get funded and regulated Midwifery in Yukon we are now continuing our work to ensure that all Yukoner’s have access to a wide range of birth choices that reflect their cultural choices and empower them throughout pregnancy, delivery and beyond.

To this day in Yukon we continue to see racism in the health care system that disproportionately affects Indigenous and new Canadian families, we see families who aren’t aware of the full range of choices for their pregnancy, deliveries, and post-partum, and we see limited services for families in Communities. The Yukon Midwifery program is thriving – they just delivered their 100th baby, and they need our support to keep doing their work, especially with a new Government in place, the new Health Authority (which may or may not come to fruition). If you care about families and the next generation of Yukoners, if you are passionate about access to health care and choices in care, then consider joining us.

We are in a rebuilding phase, and we are an active volunteer Board (meaning no Executive Director or Staff). Our goals for the coming year are to:
– create a strategic vision for the next 5-10 years
– Host a Birth Stories Event
– Reinvigorate our membership and community presence
– Continue to meet with Yukon Government Health and Social Services and Midwifery, as well as community stakeholders to represent our membership
– Make a plan to make the Yukon Baby and Maternity Fair ( which we revived this year) an annual event.

We meet quarterly at the moment as a team (so 4 meetings a year) with slightly more contact as we organize events. Estimated workload is 2-4 hours a month.

Skills Needed
We are seeking volunteers with experience in or a desire to learn about:
– communications, marketing and social media
– event planning and coordination
– health advocacy and policy development
– membership management including reinvigorating our super awesome membership discount cards for families

Responsibilities
– Attending quarterly board meetings
– Joining a committee (memberships, events, advocacy)
– Representing the YA4BC at public events
– Other duties as designated by committees would include posting to social media, coordinating events, or attending advocacy and stakeholder meetings.

Time Commitment
Quarterly meetings and about 2-4 hours a month maximum.
