A shunter is a skilled worker who is responsible for moving railway cars from one location to another within a rail yard or terminal. They use specialized equipment, such as locomotives and switch engines, to safely and efficiently move trains and individual cars to their designated destinations. Responsibilities:
- Operate locomotive to move railcars within the yard
- Perform safety inspections of equipment prior to use
- Communicate with train crews and yard personnel to coordinate movement of railcars
- Switch railcars to different tracks to facilitate loading and unloading
- Ensure compliance with all safety regulations and company policies
- Perform routine maintenance on locomotive and railcars
- Complete required paperwork and documentation accurately and timely
- Assist with training of new shunters as needed
Requirements:
- Physically fit and able to perform manual labor
- Valid driver's license and good driving record
- Ability to successfully complete training on operating shunting equipment
- Strong communication skills to effectively communicate with team members and supervisors
- Willingness to work flexible hours including weekends and holidays
- Strong attention to detail to ensure safe and efficient movement of rail cars
- Ability to work in all weather conditions
- Prior experience in a similar role preferred
