A shunter is a skilled worker who is responsible for moving railway cars from one location to another within a rail yard or terminal. They use specialized equipment, such as locomotives and switch engines, to safely and efficiently move trains and individual cars to their designated destinations. Responsibilities:

  • Operate locomotive to move railcars within the yard
  • Perform safety inspections of equipment prior to use
  • Communicate with train crews and yard personnel to coordinate movement of railcars
  • Switch railcars to different tracks to facilitate loading and unloading
  • Ensure compliance with all safety regulations and company policies
  • Perform routine maintenance on locomotive and railcars
  • Complete required paperwork and documentation accurately and timely
  • Assist with training of new shunters as needed

Requirements:

  • Physically fit and able to perform manual labor
  • Valid driver's license and good driving record
  • Ability to successfully complete training on operating shunting equipment
  • Strong communication skills to effectively communicate with team members and supervisors
  • Willingness to work flexible hours including weekends and holidays
  • Strong attention to detail to ensure safe and efficient movement of rail cars
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions
  • Prior experience in a similar role preferred
