The Shunt Driver profession involves safely shuttling trailers/trucks within designated areas, ensuring efficient movement and organization in distribution centers or warehouses. They are responsible for accurately locating and maneuvering vehicles as per schedule, reporting potential hazards, and assisting in loading/unloading operations.

Responsibilities:

  • Operate shunting locomotives to move railcars within a railway yard or industrial plant
  • Inspect railcars for defects before and after movement
  • Attach and detach railcars to and from the locomotive using hand tools
  • Communicate with yard personnel and train crews to coordinate movement of railcars
  • Perform basic maintenance tasks on locomotives and railcars
  • Operate locomotives safely and efficiently in different weather conditions
  • Follow safety rules and regulations at all times
  • Keep accurate records of work performed and railcars moved

Requirements:

  • Valid driver's license for the appropriate class of vehicle.
  • Ability to operate a shunt truck safely and efficiently.
  • Good communication skills to interact with other drivers, supervisors, and warehouse staff.
  • Physical fitness to perform duties such as climbing in and out of the shunt truck, opening and closing trailer doors, and moving heavy loads.
  • Attention to detail to ensure accurate tracking and recording of trailer movements and inventory.
  • Flexibility to work different shifts, including weekends and holidays.
  • Familiarity with safety regulations and procedures related to shunt truck operation.
  • Experience in a similar role and knowledge of warehouse operations is preferred.
