A shepherd is a professional who takes care of sheep or other grazing animals. Their duties include feeding, sheltering, and protecting the animals from predators, as well as managing the herd's breeding and health. A shepherd must have excellent animal handling skills, physical stamina, and a deep understanding of animal behavior.
Responsibilities:
- Ensure the safety and wellbeing of the flock
- Lead the flock to their grazing areas and back to their pens
- Monitor the health of each animal and provide medical attention as needed
- Keep detailed records of the flock's breeding, health, and productivity
- Coordinate with other shepherds and farm staff to ensure efficient operation
- Train and supervise any assistant shepherds or farmhands
- Repair and maintain fences, pens, and other equipment necessary for the care of the flock
- Stay informed about industry developments and implement best practices to improve the quality and productivity of the flock
Requirements:
- Physical fitness and stamina to work outside in all weather conditions for extended periods of time
- Knowledge of animal behavior and ability to identify and address health issues in livestock
- Experience with herding and managing large groups of animals
- Familiarity with common tools and equipment used in herding, such as dogs, whistles, and fencing
- Ability to work independently and make quick decisions in high-pressure situations
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, to effectively communicate with farm owners and other workers
- Willingness to work irregular hours, including early mornings, evenings, and weekends
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation to travel between different farm locations
