Ironworkers are skilled tradespeople who specialize in the installation and construction of metal structures, including bridges, skyscrapers, and stadiums. They work at great heights, often using cranes and other heavy equipment to move materials and assemble components. Ironworkers must have excellent physical stamina, as the job requires climbing, lifting, and working in all types of weather conditions. Safety is a top priority, and ironworkers must adhere to strict safety protocols to prevent accidents and injuries.

Responsibilities:

  • Ironworkers must read and interpret blueprints and construction plans to determine the layout of the steel or ironwork
  • Ironworkers must unload and erect steel or iron beams, columns, and other structures using cranes and hoists
  • Ironworkers must connect steel or iron columns, beams, and girders using bolts or welding equipment
  • Ironworkers must use metal shears, torches, and welding equipment to cut and shape steel or iron pieces to fit specific construction needs
  • Ironworkers must use safety harnesses and other protective equipment when working at heights or in hazardous conditions
  • Ironworkers must maintain and repair existing iron or steel structures, replacing worn or damaged pieces as necessary
  • Ironworkers must work with other construction professionals such as architects and engineers to ensure that construction plans are executed accurately and safely
  • Ironworkers must follow all safety protocols and OSHA guidelines to ensure a safe and secure work environment

Requirements:

  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and construction plans.
  • Experience with welding and cutting equipment.
  • Physical strength and stamina to lift heavy materials and work in challenging environments.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures and regulations in construction work.
  • Good communication skills to work collaboratively with other team members.
  • Ability to work at heights and in confined spaces.
  • Experience with rigging and hoisting equipment is a plus.
  • Certification in ironworking or related trade is preferred.
