An ASL Interpreter facilitates communication between hearing and deaf individuals, translating spoken language into American Sign Language. Responsibilities include interpreting complex information accurately and maintaining confidentiality.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide ASL interpretation services for Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals in various settings
  • Accurately convey spoken and written messages from English to ASL and vice versa
  • Assist in facilitating effective communication between Deaf and hearing individuals
  • Ensure confidentiality and ethical standards are maintained during interpretation assignments
  • Stay up-to-date on industry terminology, trends, and best practices
  • Collaborate with other interpreters and service providers to ensure quality interpretation services
  • Preparation of interpretation materials and research to support interpretation assignments
  • Provide support and advocacy for Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals during interpretation assignments

Requirements:

  • Fluent in American Sign Language (ASL) and English
  • Certification from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) or equivalent certification
  • Strong knowledge of Deaf culture and the ability to navigate diverse communities
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience interpreting in various settings such as educational, legal, medical, and vocational
  • Ability to interpret accurately and in a timely manner
  • Flexibility with work schedule and availability to work evenings or weekends
  • Commitment to ethical and professional conduct as outlined in the RID Code of Professional Conduct.
