An ASL Interpreter facilitates communication between hearing and deaf individuals, translating spoken language into American Sign Language. Responsibilities include interpreting complex information accurately and maintaining confidentiality.
Responsibilities:
- Provide ASL interpretation services for Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals in various settings
- Accurately convey spoken and written messages from English to ASL and vice versa
- Assist in facilitating effective communication between Deaf and hearing individuals
- Ensure confidentiality and ethical standards are maintained during interpretation assignments
- Stay up-to-date on industry terminology, trends, and best practices
- Collaborate with other interpreters and service providers to ensure quality interpretation services
- Preparation of interpretation materials and research to support interpretation assignments
- Provide support and advocacy for Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals during interpretation assignments
Requirements:
- Fluent in American Sign Language (ASL) and English
- Certification from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) or equivalent certification
- Strong knowledge of Deaf culture and the ability to navigate diverse communities
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Experience interpreting in various settings such as educational, legal, medical, and vocational
- Ability to interpret accurately and in a timely manner
- Flexibility with work schedule and availability to work evenings or weekends
- Commitment to ethical and professional conduct as outlined in the RID Code of Professional Conduct.
